We just got back from a few days at the Hong Kong Jewelry Fair this morning.  This show happens throughout the year, but this one and September are the 2 major conventions in Hong Kong.  These shows in Hong Kong are similar to what others have in Tucson each February in that many vendors and factories will prepare for months to showcase their newest designs and raw materials.  As a company,Tucson has become more of a fun show for us to explore and visit with old friends in the industry who do not get to see nearly often enough!  We will walk around the different shows and expo halls to touch base and see some of the new, but for the most part, this is not one of our main shows.  However, theHong Kongshows, if you want to see some serious jewelry, this is the show for you!  There is no other show (including JCK in Vegas) where you will see so much beautiful jewelry!  These shows represent every major jewelry producing country with entire aisles dedicated to their region.  Do you love Italian metal work?  Well, there is an entire pavilion dedicated to it!  How about diamonds and color stones?  Take a walk down Hall 1, 3 or 5!  Jade and Pearls?  Hall 5 for pearls and just walk around Hall1 and you will see some of the rarest and most expensive jade in the world!  This show is a collection of all different types of jewelry professionals from up and coming producers to well know and established brands.  Also at these shows you will find Tahitian andSouth Sea pearl auctions, machinery and tools, and even packaging! Shows like the February Hong Kong show give us a lot of insight in to the new ideas and trends that we will see throughout the year as we move in to Spring, Summer, and even the Fall.

So, what did we see this time around?

In all honesty, this was expected to be a slower show as Chinese New Year was only a month ago and many factories and offices only opened up towards the end of January.  However, excitement was in the air as we arrived at the show!  As you have seen from our shows in the last 6 months, Golden South Sea pearls are among the hottest and rarest of all pearls right now.  One of the main auctions saw prices increase even as farmers have tried to culture more golden tones in their pearls.  I stress the word “tried” because as I was talking to one of my friends who farms inIndonesia, I was informed that through the last few years, his family has tried to culture using only golden pinctada maxima mollusks and donor tissue.  In theory, the result should be a harvest of 100% Golden South Sea pearls, however his harvests remain solidly in the 15-20% golden harvest rate with tones ranging from light tinted golden to dark goods.  As we discussed in my last post, this is why we always collect pearls to give us the ability to select for you!

For us, Hong Kong gives us another chance to see more new ideas, but also to work and refine our own designs to have them ready for you!  We are looking forward to the coming seasons so we can showcase some beautiful brighter tones and share the results of our work not only at these shows, but every day in our office.
